I was really lucky I’d been a competitive rower and yogi. My doctor told me if I hadn’t had such a strong lower back to absorb the impact - I probably wouldn’t have ever walked again.
It took me a long time and a lot of rehab to make a full recovery. One of the toughest parts of the process of regaining my mobility and strength was relearning how to sit down. For the first 6 months after the accident, I simply couldn’t sit down. I spent all of my time either standing or lying down.
You never realize how much time you spent sitting down - until you can’t do it.
That experience gave me a profound appreciation for the importance of posture, strength, and mobility. It motivated me to find a desk chair that could help me stay healthy. Since then I’ve tried ball chairs, kneeling chairs, ultra high-end ergonomic chairs. I’ve even been known to squat in front of a coffee table with my laptop. All of it in an effort to NOT look like one of those recliners in the movie WALL-E.
Then one morning I was sitting cross-legged on a zabuton cushion while meditating and had an idea:
If I could tilt my cushion forward it would be easier to sit comfortably, while still maintaining good posture and circulation.
I happened to have a piece of scrap plywood nearby, and I put it under my cushion. Then I stacked some books under it until I found the goldilocks tilt angle, and I sat back down.
Then it really hit me. I could sit like this all day.
That was in the spring of 2021. And after dozens of designs and prototypes, the Higher Ground Chair was born.
Its elegance is its simplicity. Its value is its flexibility.
Change your chair. Change your life.
